Position Summary

Southern Oregon University’s Sociology and Anthropology (SOAN) Program invites applications for a tenure-track position at Assistant Professor in Sociology and Human Service. This position will play a central role in support of the Human Service degree completion program, an interdisciplinary degree split between the SOAN and Psychology programs. We seek candidates strongly committed to undergraduate teaching and the ability to develop research projects that can foster undergraduate involvement. Evidence of university-level teaching is required.

Desired areas of expertise include drug/alcohol addiction and evaluation research. The successful candidate will teach introductory courses, research methods courses, and advanced courses dependent on the candidate’s expertise and the program’s needs. Teaching assignments will include both day and evening classes at the Ashland and Medford campuses and may also include online courses. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the Healthcare Administration program.

Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate experience in one or more of the following; program coordination/leadership; advising and mentoring non-traditional, first-generation students; supervision of human service practicum/internships; working with community partners to establish research projects that meet community needs, and can foster undergraduate involvement.

Minimum Qualifications

• Professorial Rank: Initial appointment at the rank of assistant professor requires a Ph.D. in Sociology, Social Work, or related field. ABD candidates will be considered.
• University-level teaching

Preferred Qualifications

• 2+ years of university-level teaching
• Experience working in or with social service agencies
• Ability to develop research projects that foster undergraduate involvement
• Experience in program coordination/leadership
• Advising and mentoring non-traditional first-generation students

Physical Demands

Regular teaching activities may include standing, sitting, working at a computer, and lecturing.
