Position Summary

The Farm at SOU Coordinator serves to advance the mission and vision of The Farm at SOU. The Coordinator is responsible for ongoing management and oversight of student staff, facilities, and programs. The Coordinator will promote initiatives through Farm sponsored programming as well as program partnerships with both on-and-off campus entities. The Coordinator will work closely with The Ecology and Sustainability Resource Center at SOU (ECOS), and Facilities to partner in the advancement of SOU’s commitment to sustainability. The Coordinator will additionally work closely with SOU faculty to support Farm operations and to assist in fundraising, development, and institutional partnership.

The Farm at SOU is a living and learning laboratory for applied research and projects in sustainability. The Farm serves as a community resource for sustainability education, fosters sustainable business development, promotes interconnectedness, and facilitates leadership training through thoughtful learning and practice. The Farm currently hosts student research projects, sustainable building projects, a small farm, apiary, outdoor classroom space, and a food forest.

Minimum Classification Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Management, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Educational Administration, or related field.
• Demonstrated project management and collaboration skills.
• Prior experience with oversight and management of budgets.
• Prior experience with student mentorship and advising.
• Ability to work with diverse views and foster collaboration across constituencies.
• Commitment to modeling sustainable practices in the work place.
• Training and/or experience in farming or gardening.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Management, Business Administration, Environmental Management, or related field.
• Experience in coordinating, organizing, and implementing sustainability programs.
• Experience in environmental education.
• Prior experience in marketing and sales.

Special Conditions
•Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
•Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
•Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
•This position classification has been defined as “exempt” and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
•The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the Oregon Revised Statues and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon department of Human Services.

Physical Demands

The Coordinator will make extensive use of computer equipment. The work environment will include prolonged outdoor work including occasional heavy lifting. The work environment will additionally include frequent foot travel over uneven terrain. The Coordinator may also assist student staff with regular maintenance, landscaping, and farm tasks.

Job Duties

Duties

Administer and oversee programming and facilities at The Farm at SOU including special events, educational programming, farm operations, student research, and sustainable demonstrations.

• Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and supervise The Farm at SOU student staff members.
• Provide appropriate leadership opportunities and trainings for staff and students participating in Center programs and operations.

• Identify new and timely initiatives.
• Promote collaborative initiatives with students, institutional administration, SOU Sustainability Council, student government (ASSOU), the greater Ashland community, and other appropriate entities engaged in campus sustainability initiatives.

• Ensure that Farm facilities and staff adhere to appropriate safety standards, SOU policies, City and State ordinance requirements, and aesthetic demands.
• Work closely with Facilities Management and Planning to maintain safe and legal operating conditions.

• Work closely with SOU Foundation staff and SOU faculty to identify grant opportunities as well as in-kind and cash donations.
