Position Summary

The Assistant Athletic Instructor (AAI) works under the general director of the Head Coach to maintain and enhance the program’s success as a regional and national contender and to carry that success into the classroom and beyond. This position may assist in recruitment of qualified and gifted student-athletes, fund-raising and retention of student-athletes.

Minimum Classification Qualifications

•Three years of coaching/playing experience
•Experience with/ability to interact with a diverse population

Special Conditions
•Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
•Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
•Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
•This position classification has been defined as “exempt” and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
•The person holding this position is considered a “mandated reporter” under the Oregon Revised Statues and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon department of Human Services.
•This position may teach up to three credits of PEA courses for additional compensation
•This position may include a stipend and/or room and board, IRS guidelines consider this taxable, since living on premises is not required to properly perform the duties as advertised.

Physical Demands

Must posses the physical ability to properly demonstrate necessary techniques associated with the sport and ability to sit during travel for long periods of time.

Job Duties

Duties

Assist in all coaching aspects of the sport, including but not limited to conditioning, practice, game day coaching, film evaluation, team concepts, and traveling with the team to away games. Assist in the evaluation of SOU team and opposing teams to determine game strategy while designing individual player’s skills to assess and assign positions as appropriate. Instruct student athletes about physical health, teamwork, safety, and the appropriate techniques of the various positions and the game.

Duties

Assist in overall program operations including recruitment, database management, and other administrative duties as assigned, which may include such as game management, facility management, fundraising, resident hall supervision and Athletic department coordination with the resident halls. The assistant coach will be responsible for knowledge of, and adherence to, the NAIA, Cascade Conference and Southern Oregon University rules and regulations pertaining to recruiting, eligibility and general operation of the team.
