Position Summary

The Theatre program of the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University (SOU) is seeking candidates for a full-time, nine-month, renewable, professional track position at the Instructor or Senior Instructor level.

The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University’s Theatre Program located in Ashland, Oregon is a large and busy program with just under 250 majors. The Program mounts six full productions and many workshop and showcase presentations each year.

The faculty Technical Director is responsible for guiding and implementing the technical scenery classes that support the BA and BFA degrees in Technical Direction for the Theatre Program. The position is also the advisor and mentor of undergraduate Technical Directors in the BA/BS/BFA programs of the Oregon Center for the Arts. Typically, the faculty member in this position will serve as technical director for two or three productions per year and supervise student technical director for the remaining productions. As Technical Director, this position produces technical drawings and determines materials for set and prop designs, develops and organizes budget sheets for the builds. The Technical Director will be responsible for the training and supervision of student crews as part of the Theater Practice courses. Works in conjunction with the Scenic Design faculty, Production Faculty and Staff, student crew leaders and student crews to fully realize scenic production elements for department productions. Presence at production technical rehearsals is expected. The position will oversee the maintenance, troubleshooting, and organization of the theaters’ scene shop and two theatres.

All faculty will contribute to the administration of the department and production management for relevant areas. These duties will include contribution to departmental committees, curriculum development, student advising, recruitment, budgeting, and participation at production and faculty meetings. As a professional position, the Technical Director will also be expected to maintain their professional development. This can be achieved by occasional outside work, publishing, conference attendance, workshop presentations, or involvement in professional organizations.

Work Conditions:
• Ability to work with a flexible schedule. Must be willing to work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, and dust.
• Must be willing to travel and work at various sites.
• Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions while using the appropriate safety procedures.
• Ability to work safely in an environment containing potentially hazardous electrical equipment, fumes, vapor, gases, and/or materials.

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s of Art in Theatre or related field –OR- BFA/BA/BS degree in Theatre or related field plus 5 years of experience teaching or as a technical director in a professional or university theatre
• Demonstration of effective teaching.
• Demonstration of effective mentoring and supporting of student technicians and designers in the realization of their theatrical production elements as a key element to their training and experience in the educational environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively and cordially with fellow faculty, student designers, guest artists, and directors.
• The desire, ability, and patience to effectively teach and train novice students.
• Working knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures of theatre, including fabrication techniques in wood and metal, automation, theatrical rigging, drafting, proficiency in CADD software, production team management, electrics, and familiarity of appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
• Must have strong working knowledge of scenic construction techniques, drafting, rigging, CAD drawings, welding, and related technical theatre specialties.
• Evidence of sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students and staff.
• Possess a valid Driver’s license (if out of state apply for Oregon Driver’s License within 30 days of appointment) and have access to a vehicle for transportation to and from business related events.

For Senior Instructor level: (In addition to the above minimum qualifications)
• 5 years of professional teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of professional experience in a similar position.
• Proficiency in Vectorworks

Physical Demands

Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to perform physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting, bending, standing, climbing, and/or walking. Must be willing to work at heights, around moving machinery, and with exposure to noise, vibration, and dust.
